From the Introduction, "My family and I were privileged to live openly as Israelis, both in Cairo (1987-1989) and Amman (1994-2000). It was a fascinating and illuminating experience. We learned a great deal about Egyptian and Jordanian societies and also about ourselves as Israelis.

"Time and again, we witnessed how we do not understand each other. When I say “we,” I mean not only “we, the Israelis,” but also the Europeans and Americans, who, like us, have gone through similar experiences.

"Amman offered an extra bonus because of its significant Palestinian population: that of getting acquainted with Palestinians who were not living under Israeli rule. Our encounters with this group offered a different dimension. We were also lucky to meet a very interesting and vibrant group— Palestinians who were born and educated in Kuwait, and who were forced to leave following the recovery of that country from the Iraqi yoke in 1991.

"The vignettes assembled in this booklet are based on real events. Each of these stands on its own merit and may be read at random and not in a particular order or sequence. The approach is anthropological, rather than political.

"It is my hope that in sharing these stories with you, the readers, our experiences will somehow illustrate why and how the Arabs and the Israelis (and perhaps the West) fail to understand one another. They also show that after all is said and done, we are human beings who share the same concerns and inspirations. I hope that it will be a modest marker towards a better future."
